One of the questions that I find myself answering since the publishing of my last book (The Encyclopedia of the Unseen World) is, "what is a ghost?" First of all, I want to say that I do not agree with the term, "ghost." I feel that this title tends to cheapen what we really are, which is a "powerful spiritual being." One that is so powerful that we are able to leave our bodies after death and continue in existence in another place, another dimension, and one in which we do not die. The word "ghost" is a human term which has been cheapened by pop culture. Still, the single word that most people identify with when it comes to a person that has revealed his or herself in someway after death, is "ghost." It also seems to be a catch all phase for anything seen that is mysterious and or unexplainable that falls under the paranormal category.

However, to answer the question of what exactly is a ghost, I will go with the simplest explanation, and the most commonly known definition of "ghost" found within the metaphysical/spiritual/paranormal arenas.

A ghost is a being whose physical life has ended on the earth plane, but is still existing here. This means that after the person died, he or she did not crossover completely to the other side. Instead of moving on to the afterlife plane, the person in their etheric body, still exists on the earth plane. The reason for not crossing over can be for a number of reasons. First, the person may not understand that they have died; or they may even refuse to believe that they are dead. Therefore, they did not enter the exit point leading into the other side (for some this is a tunnel, some have described a bridge and so on). Another reason for not crossing over could be one's ties to their earthly possessions, a job, or one's family. They just cannot bring themselves to leave just yet. Another reason is that they may not have concluded their business on earth. In addition, they may have information to pass on to a loved one in regard to insurance or money, and are seeking ways to communicate this information to them. Also, if they died a traumatic death, such as murder, they may stay behind to relay information about that. There may also be the fear of punishment, such as a fear of hell. A ghost does not have to remain on the earth plane. They can crossover anytime. There are instances where help is sent from the other side to assist the person, and help them to crossover. There are other occasions when a person from this plane may reach out to help the individual understand that they are indeed dead, and need to move on. Once they have crossed over completely and entered the light, they are still able to come back and forth from the other world, to the this one, to peek in on loved ones and human affairs. Those that have completely crossed over at death, are different than ghosts. They are referred to as spirits.

Love and Light,

I cannot believe that 2011 has come and gone. For me, it was a great year in terms of my metaphysical work and my writing life. I had a great time talking with people on a number of radio shows, on the subject of life after death. People are still calling to interview me about my last book, "The Encyclopedia of the Unseen World," even though I have moved on to other projects.

One project that I will tackle in 2012 is my blog titled, "Starseed Mission Forum." Blogging is a great avenue to reach people that have questions and concerns on the subject of life after death and other spiritual and metaphysical subjects.

I am therefore going to blog once a week about a subject that relates to spiritual and metaphysical subjects. My goal is 52 blogs in 52 weeks!

You are receiving this email because you signed up for my blog about a year ago. If you know of anyone that would be interested in the subjects that I cover, please feel free to tell them about my blog. I will be happy to add them to the subscriber list.

Also, if you have any interesting personal experiences related to the topics that you find on my blog…feel free to send them to me. Your experience may be featured in one of my blog articles. If you have questions, feel free to email me as well. I am always happy to help and to answer questions relating to the fascinating world of spirituality, metaphysics, and the unseen world.

I wish all of you a wonderful New Year!

Memorial Day honors the brave American soldiers who lost their lives in wars. In observance of this day, people all over the US will visit the memorials of their loved ones who gave their lives serving in the military.

As a researcher and writer on the subject of life after death, I can only wonder how dying in such a sad, traumatic way affects the eternal soul of the soldier. More often than not, the death of a soldier happens suddenly and unexpectedly. Soldiers of war look forward to one day returning home to their families. What happens when that dream is suddenly taken from them, and they find themselves on the other side, in a different place, in a different world? Are they prepared for such an eventuality? In addition, what do they find on the other side? What awaits a soldier in the afterlife?
Ancient Norsemen believed that soldiers traveled to Valhalla, an afterlife realm that was reserved for warriors who died in battle. According to lore, Valhalla (paradise) was the place where soldiers went after a heroic death on the battlefield. There, they would enjoy celebrations given in their honor.

Is this what we can expect for soldiers who die in war? These questions were left to my imagination until I discovered Richard Hall, an American soldier who died in World War I in France. Hall had been a volunteer soldier ambulance driver in Hartmanns-Weilerkopf, one of the bloodiest areas of the war. He was killed on Christmas morning in 1915, by a German shell as he drove an ambulance up a steep, shell-endangered mountain.

Hall died with honors. At his memorial service, the Cross of War was pinned upon the French Flag, which covered his body. His tomb says simply: Richard Hall, an American who died for France.

One would think that would have been the last anyone would ever hear from Hall. However, approximately one year later, from the spiritual world, Hall found a way to communicate, and tell his story of what it was like to be a soldier who was killed in service.

One evening, a year or so after his death, Hall found a way to connect with Ruth Ebright Finley and her husband Emmet Finley, and the astonishing tale of a soldier killed during war unfolded. The Finley’s were new to spirit communication (channeling). In the beginning they even questioned the validity of what was happening. Then they began the task of accepting Hall and wrote down his communications from the other side.

They were told that Hall was an American soldier, killed in service of the allied cause. He was struck and killed by a stray shell at a desolate turn in the road up a mountain, which German guns tried intermittently to reach. His car was demolished and swept off the road. He was killed several hours before sunrise. It wasn’t until morning that he was found by his comrades traveling in ambulances along the same road of the mountain.

He revealed in his statements to Ruth and Emmet, that he had been fearful that day because the fighting was so heavy. However, when the call came, he went forth and did his job, not knowing that death awaited him. What he found on the other side upon crossing over was recorded through several channeling sessions.

Hall says, "There was a mist in the air—half mist, half smoke from the battle that had been raging for days up and down the mountain. A call came. The dark was of a blackness that could be felt, and it was cold. ... I am not ashamed to say that I was afraid… all day we had been under fire. I hummed a tune under my breath for company and to keep my courage up. Several shells burst ahead of me. I went on. I was singing when the shell that sent me into eternity, as I now know it, hit.

I went out, out, out, out. I can find no words to tell you the horror of sudden death. It is the one great tragedy. When thought returned, I was as one lost in a familiar yet wholly strange world. Aimlessly I wandered, seeking I knew not what, dazed, mystified. I did not know I was, as you say and as I used to say, dead. When death comes naturally there are always those here to meet the voyagers. But there was no one to meet me, no one to explain that I had graduated into a new plane of consciousness.

At last one came, a woman, a very sweet woman whose service here has done much to alleviate the shock of battle-field graduation, and took me by the—shall I say, hand?— and led me to a—may I say, quiet woodland spot?—where after a time I learned the hope, the reality of the triumphant blessing I had achieved.

And so I have chosen my work here, and with that work I go on—the comforting of those who come to us suddenly out of the shock of battle. I meet them, poor frightened soldier-boys, and teach them the truth —the simplicity of their own immortality."

Hall also spoke extensively about our consciousness here and in the hereafter, saying that consciousness is the one and only reality.

Hall took a terrible death and turned it into a positive life on the other side. His first job there after crossing over was to help soldiers of war to adjust to their new existence, their new way of living when arriving in from war. Perhaps somehow the families left behind can find comfort in the knowledge that their loved ones are alive and well on the other side, helped by others like Richard Hall, an American solider.

Hall's communications were published in 1920 in the book, "Conversations with an American Soldier Who Died in World War I in France."

I recently obtained some very personal information about a member of my family that was estranged from his father. As a result, the father and son did not speak or interact for over forty years…and then separately, in two different states, they both eventually died. The son went first. I don’t even know if the father knew of his son’s death.

The grandchildren never knew their grandfather or his family. He died before his grandchildren could even meet him...and they were left wondering, why their entire life, their own grandfather chose not to have any dealings with them. Now, father and son are both gone. Both have crossed over to the other side, and their children and grandchildren are left wondering about what could have been if the two had done things differently, made different choices, lived their lives differently. I wish they had chosen another path, as I am speaking of my father and the grandfather I never knew.

Both men are gone now. They completed their lives here and crossed over to the other side, this life being just a short period of time in the life of their soul. All the anger, all the pain, all the sorrow they caused each other is done. What was it all for? I cannot help but ask, could they not have done better with their time here?

What we do here, how we choose to spend our time here in this present lifetime, can affect others after we are gone, and for all we know, it may affect our lives on the other side once we cross over. We only have so many years, days and hours in a lifetime. Tomorrow is not promised. So, why not make it as loving, productive and positive as we can?

As for my father and my grandfather, like most people, they probably thought they had forever here, and that the problems between them would work themselves out. However, they grew old and time ran out.

On the other side, they have been faced with looking back on their lives here…
...and those they left behind.

I can only wonder how their life reviews went and what lessons they learned from them.

Until Next Time,

Constance

Imagine, you have met the love of your life. As a result, you have what every person desires, a wonderful relationship, passionate lovemaking, and a partner for life. You cannot fathom living life without this person, and wonder how you survived all the years on earth without them. Then tragedy strikes, and death rips this person from you. In a blink of an eye, the love of your life disappears forever. You feel as though you cannot ever breath again, let alone continuing on without them. It is a heartbreaking scenario, one that has been played out time and time again, in popular movies such as the 1990 film Ghost…and tragically in real life. But, does life mirror art? Or should I say, does the afterlife mirror art?

The movie Ghost, is a story that involves two lovers whose lives are turned upside down, when the boyfriend is murdered. Finding himself in the spirit, unable to be seen or heard, the ghost of Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze), stumbles upon medium Oda Mae Brown (Whoopie Goldberg), who is able to hear him. With her assistance, he communicates with his beloved Molly Jensen (Demi Moore), and is able to convince her that he is indeed alive in the afterlife. The end of the story shows Sam entering into the spiritual world, but not before a moving goodbye to his loved one, that he is leaving behind.

Although it is fiction, the movie had a very real feel of what happens on the other side of death, when a loved one is left behind. For those of us that have lost a loved one to death, we wonder if the one that has passed on still loves us.

If you have ever seen the movie, we know that Sam, after leaving his body, finds himself in the afterlife and is exactly the same person he was before dying. He crossed over with all of his characteristics, personality traits, and a burning love for Molly. We watch him in fact, desperately trying to reach her, and in the end, using a number of ways to communicate with her, in order to help her to understand that he is still with her. At the end of the movie, Molly has a true sense that Sam is there, and will always be by her side.

As someone that has researched the subject of life after death, and who has had the experience of a loved one on the other side contacting me, I can tell you that no, our loved ones are not lost to us. Love is the most important characteristic in the universe. It transcends life and death.

When we crossover, we do not loose who we are inside. We keep our personalities, our characteristics and our feelings. Do we still carry a torch for our lover left behind? You bet! Will our loved one that was snatched away in death wait for us? Very likely. Why? Because they are as eager as we are to be reunited. As time across the veil is different than what we experience here (there is none), we are moving forward here to the same inevitable reality. That reality can lead us straight into the arms of the one we loved and lost, when that person crossed over to the other side.

Souls often travel in groups, so more than likely that very person that you loved, but passed away, had been in your life before, and agreed to be with you when you came in, if only for a short time.

One interesting account that I recall from my book, The Encyclopedia of the Unseen World, is that of Elizabeth Taylor’s experience with Mike Todd. In the late 1950’s, Taylor died on an operating table. She was clinically dead for 5 minutes. Taylor speaks of going through a tunnel, of seeing figures that she recognized, and seeing and feeling a warm white light. She described it as being in liquid mercury and feeling weightless. There she saw Mike Todd, her third husband, whom she had loved dearly, and who was killed in a plane crash in 1958. She wanted to stay with Todd, but he told her that she had work and life ahead of her. In an interview with A&E Magazine, she states, “I believe that the soul does not die. I went to that tunnel, saw the white light, and Mike [Todd]. I said, ‘Oh Mike, you’re where I want to be.’ And he said, ‘No, Baby, you can’t come over, you have to go back.’” Taylor said that it was Todd’s strength and love that brought her back. She has also stated that as a result of this experience, she has no fear of dying.

What I find interesting about this is that Todd knew she was coming, even referred to her in the affectionate, “baby” and she felt his love.

When I was working as a reporter in Alexandria, Virginia many years ago, I came across an interesting story that I named, “The Captains Lady.” There had been reports for years about a ghostly woman that was frequently seen wandering the hills, and peering into the windows of people’s homes in the Potomac area. She apparently was quite striking with long black hair and dark eyes. After being spotted by one man unfamiliar with her story, he went outside after having spotted the woman peering into his home through a window. When he went out, there was no one there. It was explained to him later by a neighbor, that this was the captain’s lady. Apparently, in the late 1800’s in Alexandria, Virginia, when the Potomac River was a dock for ships coming in, the captain’s lady had waited eagerly for him to return after a trip out to sea. However, the captain had perished at sea during a storm. The captain’s lady was so distraught at the news, that she committed suicide in the river. Shortly afterward however, she could be seen wandering around the hills, and the grounds of the house, where she and the captain resided. Her love for him surpassed death, as she was evidently searching for her beloved captain (Unfortunately, what really happened was that she trapped herself on the earth plane through her distress, emotions and desperate act of killing herself. The captain however, more than likely crossed-over immediately to the other side). Did the Captain ever come to retrieve her? I believe that his love transcended death and that eventually, they ended up together. Hopefully, they are planning their next incarnation together.

Whomever you may be missing, rest assured that your loved one is thinking about you across the veil and smiling!

What the Dickens? – A Spiritualist’s Take on the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present & Future

Posted on December 22, 2010 by weiserbooks

Yule is a haunted time of year. Beneath all the feasting and gift-giving lurks the primal fear of deepening dark and killing cold. In modernized society we are insulated by false light, false heat, and a material wealth that our ancestors could not have imagined. Yet still – there stirs on these drear winter evenings some distant memory, genetic perhaps, of the nearness of elemental danger. A century ago, that nearness was felt much more keenly.

Charles Dickens, a Victorian author profoundly aware of the liminality of life, wrote one of the best known Christmas stories outside of the New Testament. It also happens to be one of the most terrifying.

Ebenezer Scrooge – an embittered miser – is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. These spectres show him shadows of his past, present and future – a wonderful literary device that allows for the trial and redemption of a wealthy man with an impoverished soul.

As a child, Ankhie always wondered what kind of spirits these three entities were. Marley, of course, is the classic chain-rattling moaner of every spook story ever told – but about the ones that followed?

The flame-like spirit of Christmas past?

The Falstaff-ian abundance of Christmas present?

And the grim wraith of Christmas future?

These are not ghosts in the traditional sense. Are they just works of fiction, embodiments of Ebenezer’s own guilty conscience, or is there some basis for these figures in the “real” spirit world?

When in doubt – ask an expert. So I did! I went to Constance Briggs, author of the Encyclopedia of the Unseen World...

My first thought when considering A Christmas Carol is that the ghosts of Christmas, past, present and future were not ghosts at all, at least not in the true sense of the word. Today, they would be referred to as spirit guides. Guides are beings that are with us to help us learn lessons that we come into the world to master. They are with us from the beginning, walking silently along with us, assisting us along the way. Dickens usage of the word ghosts here is not accurate, but may have been the choice wording of the time.

Ebenezer Scrooge’s experience appears to be the equivalent of an out-of-body experience (or three if you count each trip separately). Although this is fiction, Dickens was able to capture a number of spiritual themes that resembled true stories of people that have had near-death-experiences, out-of-body experiences and most importantly a life review. For your readers not familiar with a life review, it is a spiritual record of a person’s entire life history. According to many near-death-experiencers, once a person passes from physical life into the spiritual world, they are shown their life review. The review has been described as a vivid, full-color, three-dimensional, panoramic review of every single act and thought a person did in life, including the good and the bad. According to some near-death-experiencers, a person can even feel the pain they caused others.

Scrooge is visited by three spiritual beings who take him on a journey to show him how his life has affected those around him. He is informed that he can change the future he sees (which is a dismal, loveless, friendless one), if he changes his life for the better. In the end, Scrooge does change. His transformation is sincere, heartfelt, upbeat and he is excited to have been given a second chance. He also tries very hard to rectify some wrongs he has done. His changing for the better at the end of the story is a good example of how a life review can alter someone’s path.

Often people that have crossed over are given a second chance to return to their life on this side. After looking at their life review, people are sent back into their present life, and are changed for the better. Some have become ministers and spiritual teachers. Others became more loving and charitable, and still others have entered upon a spiritual journey. Their out-of-body experience coupled with their life review, changed them profoundly. This is what happened in the case of Scrooge.

I can’t help but wonder if Charles Dickens himself had some experience with spirits, or even had recollections of his astral experiences (we all have them). Also, when I look at the ghosts in A Christmas Carol, I wonder if there is even a little of Dickens himself in each of these characters. I say this because of his own close call with death, which happened in 1865 in a train accident when he was returning to England from a trip to France. Ten people were killed and forty were injured in the accident that took place in Staplehurst, Kent, England on that fateful day. Dickens himself assisted with pulling people from the cars. It is said that this event affected him greatly, and that he even incorporated his experience into his writing.

Could the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future have been Dickens’s way of encouraging people to examine their own lives in the face of the one eventuality that we all have in common? Did he realize, through his experience with the train accident, that life is fleeting and that we should use our time here wisely in showing love to others and being charitable? I know that Dickens was very concerned about the poor in his day. Were the ghosts he created for A Christmas Carol simply mirrors of his own thoughts? I like to think so.
